Building Bridges of Understanding – Our journey since 1987

It all began when a group of new migrant mothers from India started to think about the future of their young children being brought up in Australia. Would they feel like aliens when they returned to meet their grandparents, their friends and other members of their family because they did not know their language or their culture?

By learning Hindi young people grow up to be bilingual and bicultural and have the opportunity to get together, learn and help each other to shape their identities, particularly in their formative years. The study of Hindi is not the only school activity. Sport, music, drama, dance and cultural exchange are all part of the school curriculum. Our Hindi school provides an environment where you can mix with other children and young people grappling with similar issues. The camaraderie that develops in our school, and possibly at other language schools like ours, is heartwarming. You help each other grow into Indo-Australians that both India and Australia can be immensely proud of

Indo-Aust Bal Bharathi Vidyalaya Hindi School (IABBV-Hindi School) with some financial support and perpetual encouragement provided by the NSW DTEC Community Languages program, is a non-profit body, run completely by volunteers. Operational since June 1987, it is the first structured Hindi-language institution in Sydney NSW Australia dedicated to the teaching of Hindi in Sydney. Teachers are paid an honorarium for their services.

Although it is primarily for school-going children, it also offers classes for adults at basic, intermediate and advanced levels. As an outside tutor it prepares students for 2-Unit Hindi Continuers and covers the entire spectrum of formal general Hindi education in Sydney, with 12 different classes, having more than 140 students each year, from Pre-Primary to Pre-University (ages 4 and up). Classes are held at Thornleigh West Public School once a week on Sunday mornings from 9.30am to 12.00pm.
